This is a logo design for a barber shop located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It displays a pair of hands with white gloves while one hand holds a clipper and the other holds a pair of scissors. To the side of each hand, there is a razor blade. The name of the barber shop is placed in the middle, with the letter J being inside the negative space of the scissors. The reason for this was to separate the letter J from the rest of the name because the name of the owner is Jesus. The owner was born in Mexico but resides in the United States so he asked me to include a flag of Mexico on the clipper.
Issues that I encountered in this project were the first concept designs and the font style. The first concept designs I created were based on the ideas that the owner asked. At first, I had only created one design because the owner had already given me his ideas and proportions, but soon after I presented him the first sketch, he had already changed his mind to something different. The owner originally wanted a logo that had his own image on it like a cartoon or animated version of himself. The owner heavily relied on reference pictures and logos from other barber shops. I wanted his logo to be special so he also encouraged me to add on to the brainstorming process. Due to price and time, I encouraged him to go with something more simpler and straightforward. The next problem we had was the font style. The owner saw a font style in one of his reference pictures and he also wanted the same font style for his logo. This font style he wanted was like a bold cursive style, it seemed like it was hand drawn.
The image on the top left was the very first sketch that I created for the owner. He liked it, but he had another version in mind.
The image on the bottom left was the second sketch that I created for the owner based on what he wanted, which was a pair of hands with gloves holding a clipper and a pair of scissors.
The image in the top middle was the first progress picture of the logo and it had no color and only the tracing was done.
The image in the bottom middle was the second progress picture of the logo and it had more color and shadow detail.
The image on the right was a version of what the owner originally wanted but decided the font style he wanted did not look appealing.
The owner of the barber shop is a friend of mine, and I always go to him to give me a haircut. He was always asking and pressuring me to create him an official logo for his brand and I would tell him that when I was available, I would. I encouraged him for the time being to continue collecting reference images, ideas, designs and concepts as these things would greatly help me create him a better logo. He said that the reason he wanted an official logo for his barber shop, was because he wanted his brand and social media pages to look more established and professional. I made his logo based on what he wanted but he also encouraged me to help him with the design with my own thoughts. I created his official logo based on his final decisions and although it wasn't what he originally wanted, it was what he needed. I tried to keep some of the cartoon aspects he originally wanted to completely satisfy him.
As mentioned before, the owner relied too much on other images and logos from different barbers so a lot of his original ideas were mainly to replicate and adjust a little differently from the references. I made a second sketch of what could be his new logo and the owner approved it. I told him this new design would help his brand look more professional and organized compared to what he originally wanted, which was just a copy of another brand. This new logo I made with great detail because I wanted the tools to look as realistic as possible but I also tried to keep the cartoonish theme the owner wanted. I also made the Mexico flag on the clipper, even though creating the middle section was a frustrating process, it was done with as much detail as possible. As for the font style, I tried my best to replicate the reference font style but it didn't turn out as expected, so the owner and I agreed to keep the one we originally had.
The image to the left is the final version of the logo.
The image to the right is the final version of the logo but inverted.
