Break - interrupt a sequence; to separate something into pieces as a result of a blow.

I used the word "break" to create a very short but simple animation/gif to help describe the process of something breaking. The word break in the animation is already broken, it's made up of letters from different fronts. As they are assembled to create the word break, the negative space of the original letter comes from above to assist in breaking the word down. The huge block or square that comes from above to completely break down the word is made up of all five letters and their negative space. This huge block is supposed to represent a luxury pattern or design. It is meant to show that although it broke something, it was able to construct something else as a replacement, in this case, the original form was broken down to create a bigger and improved version. As soon as the word break disappears from the composition, the luxury pattern takes over the whole screen.

A few challenges that I encountered during the process of this project was the position and angle that I took the pictures, finding and selecting font types, design or pattern for final composition, and the frame per seconds. I took the pictures with my iPhone 11, so the quality of the pictures weren't superior but they were acceptable. I would've preferred to take the picture with a more high quality camera but due to time, that wasn't done. That being said, the problem in this case was not the camera type but the angle of the camera and the positioning of the tape or border to create different forms and styles of each letter. I had to pick ten different fonts for each of the five letters. I had to determine which ones to use, and this was a frustrating process because there are so many font styles that look familiar to each other and the original form. The luxury design was necessary for this project, so creating different versions was very time consuming. Choosing how many frames per second was the last struggle that I experienced, because I was trying desperately to choose a frame per second that wasn't too fast or too slow.

The goal of this project was to create a composition and animation based on a single word of my choice. I chose the work break because during the time that I was working on this project, I wasn't feeling one-percent, due to personal reasons so I thought that the word break could in a way resemble what I was feeling and experiencing during this time. I have created compositions based on a single word before, but this project required an animation which was completely different from my normal non-animated works.

Another side goal for this project was to strengthen my animation skills in photoshop and improve my tracing with the pen tool in illustrator, also being able to work on different compositions at the same time. Before this project, I had always created my animations through premiere pro and/or after effects, I had no idea that it could be done in photoshoot. This surprised me and I was excited to experiment with the animation tools that photoshop offered. The photos of the letters were taken from a top view, I had my iPad display each letter and I would place a tape border to create a variety of interesting styles. Then I would take these pictures and trace them in illustrator. I was already very familiar with the pen tool in the majority of the adobe programs but the pen tool in illustrator truly is a gem. I love using this tool to create many compositions but this project made me realize how frustrating it could be as well. Some styles had staggered lines so tracing these styles was a pain but the results made it worth the struggle. Working with different compositions can be a frustrating process but if well organized, it can be done with ease. For this project I had to work with multiple compositions to create all the different types of font styles of each letter.

As mentioned before, the camera quality was not the issue but the angle and position of how the pictures were taken. I took about twenty different pictures of each letter style, but I only used five letters. Each photo was different than the previous, they had to be, some were taken with a slight tilt, some with borders, and some close ups. After this long and tedious process of taking pictures, I had to select which font type and/or style was best to create my luxury design. It was hard to make up my mind so I had to grab a few from each letter, lay them out in columns and rows and experiment with the colors to see which ones were visually interesting. As for the final design, it was hard to make up my mind as well because from the three that I made, they all looked interesting. Although I could've made more designs from the font styles, I had to decide quickly due to more upcoming projects. I ended up going with the green and red design because that one to me gave me more of a luxury brand vibe compared to the other two. As for the frames per seconds, I decided that each scene would not share the same frames per second. In the middle of the animation where the luxury design comes down to break the word, it comes in fast, but as it bounces up in the air, it comes back down slowly. This was intentional because I wanted the whole animation to be immersive.
